Elizabeth Warren, Purdue Pharma and the Opioid Lobbyist

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONCORD, N.H. — Today, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is campaigning alongside Cinde Warmington, despite Warren’s previous condemnation of the Opioid Lobbyist’s former client.

“Cinde Warmington lied on behalf of Purdue Pharma and put her own self-interest ahead of what was best for New Hampshire and our neighbors,” said Chairman Scott Maltzie. “Voters will reject the Opioid Lobbyist on November 3rd.”

Background:

In a 2019 blog, Warren stated that, “the Sacklers made their money pushing OxyContin. Pushing it even as study after study demonstrated its addictive potential”.

Warren called for accountability and criminal penalties for those who “deliberately hurt people through criminal negligence — for example, by dumping mountains of highly addictive pills into towns”.

As a lobbyist for Purdue Pharma, Cinde Warmington testified before the New Hampshire Senate in 2002 defending the company and advocating for looser restrictions on OxyContin, calling it a “miracle drug” with “very few side effects”.

Warmington was paid to push Purdue Pharma’s lies even as state health officials and law enforcement were sounding the alarm about its dangers:

“We believe that Purdue Pharma has manufactured a drug which is highly addictive and it’s in a form… they produced in a form which makes it abuseable; that is a problem that they need to correct, and I hope they do.” – Former DHHS Commissioner Donald Shumway

“We have had a number of night break-ins, armed robberies, unarmed robberies, and strong-arm robberies which Oxycontin had been demanded. The people who are abusing these drugs are willing to risk committing more serious crimes because nothing else matters but getting those drugs.” – Nancy Wiggins, New Hampshire State Police
